In this tech-centric world, high paced internet ads, online marketing and mobile seem to be in vogue. But when it comes to really grabbing the attention of potential customers, sometimes a good old fashioned sign or banner can be your best bet. More than half of small business owners find in-store signage and graphics (point of purchase) effective in attracting customers. This, according to the results of a nationwide survey conducted just this past year. As the old saying goes, One hundred percent of retail operators agree, a Business with No Sign is a sign of No Business.

The survey, which polled more than 500 small businesses in the USA this past Spring, goes on to say that 64% of millennial small business owners (age 18 to 34) place value on creativity in signs and banners. By contrast, their baby boomer counterparts (age 55 and older) place a higher emphasis on simplistic designs.

Whatever your preference, the way a sign or banner is designed can have a significant influence on a company’s ability to attract and acquire new customers. Who among you hasn’t stopped at a store and made a purchase simply because you saw the sign?

To get the most out of your signage, ArtLab Signs and Banners believes there are three important Design Elements that Attract customers! All business owners need to keep these in mind when designing banners, posters and other signs. Continue reading, . . . ArtLab Signs and Banners – Design Elements that Attract. Here are the three top design elements to consider.

  1. Color Counts – The choice of a compelling color plays a huge part in the design of a well designed sign or banner. Think of “Coke red” or “Pepsi blue” or even “McDonald’s yellow.” Because of effective marketing and consistent usage, those colors make the viewer think of the product sub-consciously. Color can help convey a brand’s identity. Studies have shown that 80% of trademark recognition is due to color. Another important consideration: trendy colors. Some business owners may feel the need to convey their message via signs that use current, modern colors. However, care should be taken to consider longevity when designing signage meant to last. After all, today’s popular color may be out of fashion next year.
  2. Contrast for Readability – A sign or banner’s contrast will usually determine how easy it is to read and comprehend. Contrast, therefore, is a huge factor for any attention attracting sign or banner. Most layouts will include either text or graphics in the foreground, with a continuous background color. The contrast between these two elements is critical to the viewers retention of the content (your message). Consider a dark color on a very light background, or the opposite, black on white or white on blue. Pairing similar colors can decrease a sign’s readability. However, a weak color contrast can be strengthened by adding an outline or drop shadow around the foreground lettering. Adding a border around the text or graphic can also increase reading speed.
  3. Size Matters – Simply put, the larger the letter, the easier it is to read. This is especially important if you are designing signs that are to be read from a distance, such as roadside signs or inside expansive interiors. A good rule is ten feet per inch of letter height. Therefore if your viewer is 100 feet away, use a 10″ letter. Different fonts also affect legibility. While you may thinks a fancy font looks attractive, it may be difficult to read over greater viewing distances.
